Green Willow Branches and Melodious Pastoral Songs depicts a countryside scene that a young girl of She nationality is herding buffalos. The girl is in traditional costume of She nationality. Her hair is plaited with a red wool.  She rides on the back of a buffalo, with a bamboo branch in her hand for herding the buffalos. Around the girl there are green willows and flopping birds.  Several buffalos are leisurely moving through the green willow bushes in such a beautiful spring day. In all, the picture presents a unique beautiful scenery in the southern riverside villages. Same as his previous series of Folklore of She nationality, Lin utilizes heavy colors for fine brushwork and splashing colors for imagery in this painting to present the characteristic temperament of She nationality on the girl.

Lin Zhiqiang is very good at ink wash figure painting. The artist Weng Zhenxin said “Lin Zhiqiang’s ink wash figure paintings present the tenacious vitality of realistic style with true affection, soundness, simplicity and purity.” Lin has been insisting in ink wash realistic figure paintings  and have created a plenty of portraits. He follows the principles of “expressing the spirit with form” and “combination of form and spirit” and stresses the soundness and subtleness of the figure itself to make it natural, simple and realistic. Just like in Green Willow Branches and Melodious Pastoral Songs, the image of the girl is rather vivid. We can see the girl’s eyes are looking to the right.
